Sports Day

Priory School Mini Olympic Games Sports Day

Thursday, 9th July 2015

This year 260 children, aged 7-11yrs from Priory Junior competed in their very own special mini Olympic Games sports day.  Thirty teams representing thirty Olympic Games Countries went head to head, contesting 15 exciting events. The morning’s proceedings opened with the whole school performing a special sports dance created by the Priory Sports Leaders.

Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded in each event by the mayor of St Neots, Cllr James Corley.

There were events in sprinting, relays, hurdles, long-jump, throwing, tug of war, blind football, boccia and more… and even a special club 75m mascot race won by Dr Croc in a sensational time of 10.02 seconds. There was tremendous support on the side-lines from parents and helpers - the atmosphere was incredible.

There was a real cultural element with the children representing 30 of the smaller Olympic Games Nations. The top team was Panama (Eddie (Y3), Edward(Y6), Amelia (Y6), Natasha (Y3), Ellie (Y5), Mikey (Y5), Callum (Y6) and Toby (Y3), with Montenegro just five points behind in second.

On the track, there was some sensational sprinting with Niamh's (Y5) 11.04 seconds and Joe's (Y6) 10.95 secs, setting new track records in the Yr5/6 75m sprints. In the Yr3/4 50m sprint races new sports day records were also set by Lewis (Y4) in the boys’ race with a time of 7.38 seconds and Shakeira (Y4) lowering the girls’ standard in a time of 7.78 seconds. A new Yr5 sports day record was also set in the boys howler throw with Charlie (Y5) hurling the mini javelin a sensational 39m.

Once again, an event of this type has given many children the chance to experience the excitement of a big sporting occasion and plenty of potential has been discovered.
